How 3D Printing Works

Let's dive into the details of the 3D printing process.

3D printing, or additive manufacturing, transforms a digital 3D model into a solid object by depositing material layer by layer. This fascinating process starts with a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) model, your blueprint for the 3D printed object.

Before printing, the CAD file is converted into a format recognized by the printer, typically STL (Standard Tessellation Language). This file is then 'sliced' into hundreds or thousands of horizontal layers using slicing software. Each slice represents a cross-section of the final object.

Next, the printer reads these slices and starts printing layer by layer. At '3D Print Everything', we primarily use Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), also known as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). In this process, a filament of thermoplastic material is heated until molten and extruded through a nozzle that moves in the X and Y coordinates. The build plate descends for each new layer, allowing the object to be built in the Z-direction. Materials commonly used in FFF include PLA, ABS, ASA, Polycarbonate, Carbon Fiber, Nylon, and PETG, each offering different properties and applications.

We also provide Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), an advanced 3D printing technology. SLS uses a high-powered laser to fuse small particles of plastic or metal into a mass that matches the 3D model. This allows for the creation of complex shapes that would be impossible with traditional manufacturing methods.

For larger prints, our large-format 3D printers come into play, capable of creating models up to 1m x 1m x 1.6m in size. Additionally, we offer CNC machining and Injection Molding services through our partner network for projects requiring large quantities or specific materials.

Once printed, many 3D objects require post-processing to achieve their final appearance or function. These steps can include support removal, sanding to smooth rough surfaces, painting or airbrushing for color and aesthetic appeal, and electrolysis metal plating for added strength and durability.

3D printing is a rapidly evolving field, constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible. At '3D Print Everything', we stay on the cutting edge of this technology, offering you a wealth of options to bring your ideas to life.
